Let's Change Your Negative Self-Talk

Are you your own worst critic? Most of us tend to be far harder on ourselves than we would ever be on our friends.

We hear ourselves sing on a recording and think that literally everyone else on the recording sounds great but judge ourselves with NO MERCY!

I'm as guilty of this as the next person so hear me when I say that it doesn't have to be this way. With a little bit of effort, we can challenge that voice in our heads that tells us we're just not that good.

And honestly, that voice is likely getting in your way. What would happen if you could be in a practice session or a lesson or a performance and actually believe that we can accomplish what we set out to accomplish? What if we could encourage ourselves the way we encourage our friends and our students?

Instead of "I'm not good at this"

Try "I have so much to learn!"

Instead of "I don't have enough time to practice"

Try "I will make the most of my practice time."

Instead of "This is too hard. I give up."

Try "I need to think about this another way."

Instead of "I'm not going to sing this song. I'm just not good enough."

Try "I will try this song and see what it teaches me. If I don't love it, there are so many more songs."

What negative self-talk do you need to change?
